For the second time in as many years the Goose Creek community will come together on Saturday, August 7th to lend a helping hand to neighbors in need. Unity Day, held at Goose Creek High School, provides free of charge such back-to-school essentials as notebooks, paper, and pencils, boxes of food, and gently used clothing. Available services include health screenings , free hot dogs for attendees, and assistance with filling out school-related forms. Spanish translators will be available.
Project Chair and Goose Creek High Principal, Jimmy Huskey, says he continues to sees a need for such events. “Our children deserve to go back to school sure that their needs will be met. They need to go back ready to learn and not worried about having something to wear, something to eat, or something to write on.”
Organizers anticipate a demand for more than the three-hundred boxes of food distributed on last year’s Unity Day. With basic food supplies such as dried beans and milk purchased from Helping Hands of Goose Creek, neighbor can help neighbor for around five dollars a box.
Huskey continues. “Last year a lot of the money came from business donations but fewer have stepped forward this year and the need is greater this year than last”
It is not too late to help neighbors by supporting this community event. If you or your organization are interested in helping with planning, with lending expertise, with donating money for food or school supplies, or with sharing gently used clothing, contact Gaye Huskey at (843) 822-5018.
Partners in the event include the schools that lead to Goose Creek High (among them Goose Creek Primary, Sedgefield Intermediate, Westview Middle and Sedgefield Middle), Helping Hands of Goose Creek, and several area churches, including Crowfield Baptist, New Life Christian Church, Restoration Ministries, Peace Presbyterian, and Harbor Lake Baptist Church.
